I was recently featured as a source in a new article on The Athletic about the NHL combine, including:

✅ The goal of the combine and how NHL staffs are viewing testing data ✅ Why players should be well-prepared for the tests, even if they aren’t gifted in a specific area ✅ The most “important” test to gain insight into a player’s output potential ✅ Some insight into how players prepare (courtesy of @post_meloni)

I was recently invited as a guest on the Our Kids Play Hockey Podcast to discuss youth hockey player development, a topic I’ve always been passionate about, but one I’m now gaining a different perspective on with two young kids starting up their own journeys through sport.

    In the episode, we discussed:

    • The key characteristics that set NHL players apart
    • Practical tips for optimizing sleep and nutrition for young athletes
    • Navigating mental health and pressure in youth sports
    • Effective training methods that balance strength and speed
    • Understanding individual differences in athlete development

I’m fortunate to have been asked to present, so I’ll be doing a deep dive on speed training for hockey.

In addition to my presentation, the event will feature 8 other talks from some of the top professionals working in hockey:

🏒 Cal Dietz (University of Minnesota) – TBD
🏒 Brijesh Patel (Quinnipiac University) – Implementing RPR and ELDOA in a Team Setting
🏒 Maria Mountain (Goalie Training Pro) – Three Pillars of Goalie Performance and Durability
🏒 Scott Leech (University of Rhode Island) – Contact Preparation
🏒 Matt Kelly (Be Elite) – Mission Hip-Possible: A Tactical Approach to Navigating the Hip and Groin in Hockey Players
🏒 Alex Allan (Bold Athlete) – From Gym to Ice – Getting Better Transfer for the Advanced Player
🏒 Corey Petersen (University of St. Thomas) – Don’t Forget to Train the Brain! Integrating Cognitive Drills into Your Programming
🏒 Charlie Bando (Bando Performance) – When Do You Determine a “Hockey Player” a “Hockey Player”?

The presentations will go live on May 12th, and then there will be several Q&As with the speakers throughout June and July. This is a cool feature because it allows you to watch the presentation, and then ask follow-up questions or points of clarification directly to the speaker.

In this clip from “Bruins Academy” Tim and Lebbossiere and I outline lower body strength training exercises youth hockey players can do with no equipment to help them get into and maintain deep skating positions and more powerful strides.

Speed training is critical for hockey players. While it’s important to emphasize traditional acceleration drills in an off-ice training program, speed is expressed in sport through a variety of transitional patterns. In this quick segment Tim Lebbossiere and I filmed for “Bruins Academy”, we go over 3 speed training drills youth hockey players can do that don’t require any equipment, but emphasize transitional patterns that will help transfer to speed on the ice.
